How to make your frozen smoothie taste even better?

If you’re new to the frozen smoothie world, you might be struggling to create your dream smoothie.

Or maybe you’re an old hand with the blender, but are just looking to mix it up a little.

Either way, I’m sharing my top tips on how to make your frozen smoothie taste even better!

Add in some spices

In my experience, spices (and herbs) are the most overlooked ingredients when it comes to making smoothies and more importantly, frozen smoothies.

But although you only use small amount of spice, they can pack a big flavour-punch!

So if you’re not incorporating them into your smoothies, now is the time to start.

Some easy ones to start with are:

  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice
  • Cocoa/cacao (technically not a spice, but a great flavour for beginners!)
  • Mint
  • Parsley
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric

Want to get a little more creative?

You can give these ingredients a whirl:

  • Chilli
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Fennel seeds
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom
  • Sage
  • Coriander
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Star anise

Remember, a little goes a long way, particularly with the more powerful spice options like pepper and of course, chilli.

Get creative with flavour combos

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with the classic spinach, banana, protein powder and base liquid formula for smoothies.

But for some people, having the same smoothie every day can get boring pretty quickly.

That’s where it can be fun to get creative and try out some different flavour combinations.

For example, you could try these smoothie flavour combos:

  • Tropical – using ingredients such as banana, coconut, mango, pineapple
  • Red Velvet – combining beetroot and cocoa with your preferred fruit and base
  • Black Forest – using cherries and cocoa with your preferred base
  • Bounty – using cocoa and coconut with your preferred base
  • Salted Caramel – combining mesquite and sea/Himalayan salt with banana and preferred base
  • Mocha – a shot of coffee and cocoa with banana and base

These above are just a few examples of some of the new flavours you can create and how to create them.

But the only real limit is your imagination!

Balance the stronger tastes

Let’s be honest.

A lot of the time, we use smoothies as a vehicle to get nutritious food into our bodies without having to taste that food.

While this is a smart move, it’s important to balance out the foods you might not want to taste with more pleasant additions!

One of the most common examples used in smoothies is kale.

The majority of people either dislike kale, or at the very least wouldn’t rate it as one of their favourite foods.

But if you don’t balance out the taste of the kale with other ingredients, there’s a good chance your smoothie will end up tasting mostly of kale!

The stronger the taste of a food, the stronger you need that counter-balance ingredient to be.

Spinach is easy to cover up with almost any fruit because it has a subtle flavour.

In fact, even half a banana can do it.

But to balance a full serve of kale, you’d need at least one serve of strong-tasting fruit along with some tasty spices in your smoothie.

Start with a tasty base

Don’t have much time to get creative with your flavours or shop for a dozen different ingredients?

What now you say?

Some of you may fail in creating the ultimate and best tasting frozen smoothie in the world, but that is a risk I’m willing to take.

And in reality, the worst thing that could happen is that you discover ingredients and spices that you don’t like and will never use again.
